What is Foot Reflexology?

Foot ReflexologyDon’t be fooled into thinking that Foot Reflexology is just a fancy name for a regular, run-of-the-mill foot massage. It’s similar to, yet very different from, a typical massage. Although reflexology will most definitely soothe your aching feet, it will also help to relieve stress and promote healing to all of your internal body systems. Foot reflexology is one of the oldest natural healing treatments known to man, dating back many thousands of year. Using the premise of ancient Eastern philosophy, reflexology re-balances chi – your life force, or energy, that flows through your body. This non-invasive ancient healing art is based on the principle that there are reflexes in the feet which correspond to every part, gland and organ of the body. In other words, every part of the foot corresponds to a different area of the body. Through the application of pressure on these various reflex points located on the feet and toes, without the use of any special tools or lotions, reflexology relieves tension, improves circulation and helps promote the natural function of the corresponding areas of the body. So, to put it simply, receiving a Foot Reflexology Massage is the equivalent of getting a full body massage – and you get to keep your clothes on. Reflexology can work alone or in conjunction with conventional Western medical practices to improve overall well-being and vitality. Now, Ettia Tal, a world-renowned expert in the holistic healing arts, offers Foot Reflexology treatments in New York City.

Your Feet are a Mirror of Your Whole Body

The rewards of Foot Reflexology therapy can be received by anyone at any age and at any stage of life – from newborn babies on up. It holistically harmonizes all body systems and enhances the functioning of mind, body and soul. This specialized form of body work is based on the theory that our whole body is reflected on our feet.

Modern ReflexologyModern Reflexology can be traced back to the early 1900’s with nose and throat specialist, William Fitzgerald, MD’s introduction of Zone Therapy. Based on the original ancient Eastern philosophy, he developed a systematic chart that divided the body into ten longitudinal ‘zones’, ending in the fingers and toes. He then created ‘maps’ of the reflexology points in the feet (and hands), linking each zone of the body to a pressure point on the feet. He discovered that pressure on one part of a zone could affect other parts of the body within that zone. Later, other doctors furthered Fitzgerald’s research and added horizontal zones across the feet (and hands) which determined individual reflexes. Finally, Eunice Ingham, a physical therapist, refined Zone Therapy. She made an anatomical model in which all of the organs of the body were mapped out on the feet, resulting in a more precise identification of the reflex points, providing the framework for what is now modern Foot Reflexology. Genuine Foot Reflexology, as opposed to a typical foot massage, is the application of pressure on various zones on the soles of the feet and toes. With that pressure, a reflex action in another part of the body, the part that corresponds to the foot zone map, is stimulated, providing treatment and relief to that area of the body.

There are Countless Health Benefits to Foot Reflexology

Reflexologists use the foot zone map as a guide to promote healing, general wellness and relaxation for the body. Each foot represents a vertical half of the body. The left foot corresponds to the left side of the body and all organs, valves, etc. found on that side. The right foot corresponds to the right side of the body and all organs found there. A big difference between massage and reflexology is that in massage, the therapist works ‘from the outside in’, manipulating muscle groups to release tension. Reflexology practitioners work ‘from the inside out’, stimulating the nervous system to release tension. The Reflexologist applies pressure to the correct point on the foot to relieve stress or tension in a particular area of the body. When pressure is applied to the point on the foot, it sends a message to the brain to release endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain relievers. The intent at Innovative Healing Touch is to manipulate and treat the entire soles of the feet, through Foot Reflexology Therapy, so that all the parts of the body can also be stimulated or treated from within to improve your body’s ability to heal itself and to promote overall health and wellness.

  • Reduce Stress: When you’re stressed, your body’s defenses break down making you more susceptible to illness. Reflexology reduces stress by generating deep tranquil relaxation, helping the body balance itself and allowing healing energy to flow. No matter where you hold or store your stress, it can be relieved through massaging the appropriate points on your feet.
  • Increase Circulation, Flush Toxins & Brighten Your Skin: Blood needs to flow freely throughout the body to carry oxygen and nutrients to the cells and remove waste and other toxins. By reducing stress and tension, Reflexology allows the cardiovascular vessels to conduct the flow of blood naturally and easily. There’s even a spot on your foot devoted specifically to your largest organ; your skin, so massaging this spot increases blood flow to the skin to give you a healthy glow.
  • Relieve Pain: By stimulating reflex points in the feet, Reflexology opens and clears nerve pathways to reduce pain.
  • Toughen Your Immune System: Reflexology stimulates the lymphatic system, cleansing the body of impurities and reducing the risk of infection.
  • Increase Energy and Vitality: The flow of energy is revitalized throughout the body when Reflexology opens up energy pathways.
