What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, noninvasive, yet very effective type of healing bodywork. It is a hands-on, whole-body method of light touch therapy and manipulation that encourages the body’s own natural inner systems to improve the functioning of the organs, dissipate the negative effects of stress, and enhance general health and resistance to disease. This alternative holistic approach promotes a profound healing process of releasing the deeply held negative physical and psychological patterns that accumulate throughout life, within the body, that can lead to poor health or dysfunction.

At Innovative Healing Touch, our purpose in Craniosacral Therapy is to establish a free flowing, strong vitality throughout the body, allowing your own inner healing forces to release any tensions or restrictions, so that any negative conditions and their underlying causes can be resolved. Craniosacral therapy can benefit people of all ages and can help with many conditions, from minor aches and pains to severe and chronic health issues. The majority of our clients have found relief from migraine headaches, sinus pain, depression and chronic neck and back pain with Craniosacral sessions.

How Does Craniosacral Therapy Work?

Craniosacral Therapy involves two areas of the body; the cranium or skull bones that protect the brain, and the sacrum, the triangular foundation bone at the base of the spine. The Craniosacral System includes the brain and nerves that connect in a network to all of the body’s organs. Inside the cranium the brain floats in clear cerebro-spinal fluid, which also flows through a sheath, down and around the spine, protecting it and keeping it lubricated.

Every day your body endures stresses and strains that it must work to compensate for.Due to this every-day wear and tear and injury or trauma, the outer layers of the sheaths covering the brain and spinal cord become tight and twisted, just like muscles can. (Think of it as a hose that has a kink in it, blocking the flow of water). The tension that forms around the brain and spinal cord results in restrictions that can create a barrier to the healthy performance of the central nervous system, and potentially every other system it interacts with.It happens to everyone and can cause pain, numbness, headaches, digestive problems and a whole host of other health issues.

Craniosacral TherapyCraniosacral Therapy is based on the theory that the whole craniosacral system has subtle, rhythmic pulsations that are vital to health and can be detected and modified using simple methods of touch. With a light touch, the CST practitioner uses her hands to evaluate the craniosacral system by gently feeling various locations of the body to test for the ease of motion and rhythm of the cerebro-spinal fluid pulsing around the brain and spinal cord. Soft-touch techniques are then used to release restrictions and stimulate healing in any tissues influencing the craniosacral system. The goal of Craniosacral Therapy bodywork is to normalize the environment around the brain and spinal cord and promote free-flowing spinal fluid, allowing the spinal cord to move freely as well. The body’s natural healing power is set into motion when this system is balanced and flowing smoothly. What to Expect at Your Craniosacral Therapy Session

The fluid within the craniosacral system is continuously draining and refilling. This cycle creates gentle, rhythmic, expanding and contracting movements, also referred to as “craniosacral rhythm.” You’ll rest, fully clothed on a massage table while Ettia Tal, our trained CST Therapist, assesses the patterns of energy in your craniosacral rhythm with precise and gentle touch. The source of pain isn’t always obvious, but using a gentle touch, (starting with the weight of about a nickel), Ettia will evaluate your internal environment with gentle assessments and painless, manipulative techniques to balance the fluid and release any restrictions she finds. This stimulates your body to enhance self-healing, to release and open up to a more balanced, healthy state.

Our physical and emotional life experiences are stored in our bodies and CST unlocks any leftover trauma that is still in storage. With the unlocking and opening of the storage vault comes the gentle release of any restrictions contributing to your pain or dysfunction. You may also feel an emotional release, greater clarity and a sense of inner peace. The positive changes to your physical well-being will enable your body to perform at its greatest level of performance. When your nervous system functions more smoothly, every aspect of your life takes on an ease that you may not have ever felt before.
