As we stated in our earlier BACK TO BEAUTY post, Ettia Tal, our local Beauty Barista, has a little homework assignment for you. Ettia truly believes in an all natural, back to basics beauty approach. To prove it, she’s putting her honey where her mouth is by providing you with a recipe for a home facial cleanser, scrub, toner and mask using ordinary household ingredients. That’s right! We can show you how to pamper yourself with a fabulous facial by using ordinary items you probably already have in your pantry. Observe:
WASH
What: Gentle honey wash.
How: Mix a dollop of honey + 2 tbps. warm
water in the palm of your hand. Gentle massage the mixture into your skin.
Why: Honey has long been valued in Asia for its natural medicinal properties. Combined with rice bran, honey is used there to treat diaper rash and even acne. Honey is also an excellent treatment for dry skin as it stimulates good circulation and helps to seal in moisture.
SCRUB
What: Oatmeal facial cleanse.
How: Place 2 tbps. of oatmeal in a bowl. Add warm water until the mixture is paste-y. Rub onto the skin using circular motions (be careful around the eyes!). Leave the mixture on your face for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water. End the session with a splash of cold water, then pat your skin dry with a towel.
Why: Oatmeal’s texture is excellent for thorough yet gentle exfoliation of your pores. The oats actually absorb dirt and impurities. This powerful pore-age also hydrates and softens skin.
TONE
What: Soothing Green Tea Toner
How: Steep 1/2 teaspoon of green tea powder in 1/2 cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. After cooling, apply tea to the face with an organic cotton ball.
Why: Catachins. Say it ten times fast – we dare you. Catachins are a special mix of antioxidants found in green tea that have proven to be natural-born free radical killers. No; “free radicals” aren’t a splinter group of the Green Tea Party. They are molecules that cause pre-mature aging in your skin. Green tea zaps them before they gain a foothold on your face.
MASK
What: Avocado+Egg Facial Mask
How: Mash a single avocado with one (1) egg yolk. Apply to the face and leave on skin for 10 minutes. Thoroughly wash off mixture and pat face dry.
Why: Avacados are actually oversized berries that are chock-full of great stuff for your skin, including: vitamins A,E, B and K as well as iron, potassium magnesium and other healing minerals. A little guacamole on your face penetrates deep beneath the surface to help restore elasticity to dry skin.
Alright, you’ve got you’re Beauty Basics assignment, girls. Go get it on!
